Unable to turn off the computer.

I cannot turn off my notebook computer from Windows or the power/suspend button. The computer is in the state that the power cannot be turned off.

On the [Shut Down Windows] menu of Windows, when I select [Shut down] and then click [Yes], the computer stops at the [Shutting down Windows] (or [Ready to turn off the computer]) screen.

* I cannot open the [Shut Down] window.

* I cannot turn off the computer with the power/suspend button.

Take the right solution for each situation.

1. On the [Shut Down Windows], if you select [Shut down] and then click [Yes], the computer stops at the Shutting Down Windows or Ready to turn off the power screen.

Press the Esc key.
If the computer does not respond, turn off the computer with the power/suspend button. When the above message is displayed, if you turn off the computer forcibly, your data may not be damaged.

2. Unable to open the [Shut Down Windows].

Press Alt + F4 at the same time a few times. If the [Shut Down Windows] appears, select [Shut down] on the screen, and then click [Yes].

If the [Shut Down Windows] does not appear, press Ctrl + Alt + Del at the same time. When the task list appears, click [Shut down].

If you cannot perform the above operations, turn off the computer with the power/suspend button.

In this case, your data may be damaged. In addition, Scandisk may be started or Windows may be started in Safe mode when you restart the computer.
Follow the instructions on the screen until the Windows desktop appears. After that, on the [Shut Down Windows], select [Shut down], and then click [Yes] to turn off the computer normally.

3. Unable to turn off the computer with the power/suspend button.

For PCG-N505x and PCG-Cxx, press the reset button.

To press the reset button, you need a thin stick like a paper clip. Do not use something that may be broken such as a lead of a mechanical pencil. A broken lead may cause a problem.

Location of the reset button:
PCG-N505x: At the lower center of the rear side of the computer. A 1.5-mm-diameter hole.
PCG-Cxx: At the lower center of the rear side of the computer. A 1-mm-diameter hole.

In this case, your data may be damaged. In addition, Scandisk may be started or Windows may be started in Safe mode when you restart the computer.
Follow the instructions on the screen until the Windows desktop appears. After that, on the Shut Down Windows screen, select [Shut down], and then click [Yes] to turn off the computer normally.

If the above does not solve the problem, disconnect the AC adapter and the battery.

In this case, your data may be damaged. In addition, Scandisk may be started or Windows may be started in Safe mode when you restart the computer.
Follow the instructions on the screen until the Windows desktop appears. After that, on the [Shut Down Windows], select [Shut down], and then click [Yes] to turn off the computer normally.

When you restart the computer, run the BIOS Setup Program as a precaution and restore the factory default hardware configuration (CMOS). Make sure that the date and time setting is correct.
When this information are set incorrectly, Windows does not work correctly.

To start BIOS Setup Program, press F2 key while the SONY logo is being displayed after turning on the computer.

[Remarks]
If this symptom often occurs when using Windows, check the program or data that was installed when this symptom started and its operations. In addition, make sure that the BIOS of the computer and device drivers are compatible with the operating system.

If you added peripherals or the computer is logging in network system, check the shut down status on the condition without peripherals or logging out network.
In Windows 98, if the operating system is communicating with peripherals or network, the power cannot be turned off. Some device drivers of peripherals may not be able to be terminated forcibly by the operating system. For this reason, the computer may not be turned off automatically.
If the computer cannot be turned on after turning off, refer to the solution for the problem.
