What to do when user performs a system recovery or data backup

The computer is formatted when performing a system recovery, and files saved on the hard disk will be lost. Before a system recovery, please save the important data onto the CD-R, DVD-R or removable hard disk.

    Remark
All the VAIO models sold after January, 2007, have been preinstalled with Windows Vista. If Windows cannot run properly, please rescue the data by using VAIO Date Rescue Tool.
Regarding how to troubleshoot this issue, please refer to the following related information.

In addition, as Internet or Email settings have been initiated after a system recovery, user needs to reset the settings.

When user backs up the data, please refer to Where to back up the data and Whether you can back up the data properly.

If user uses third party software, please be sure to back up data, or consult the software manufacturer about how to back up data before a system recovery.

If customers perform data backup by themselves, SONY cannot guarantee the data security. Sorry for inconvenience.

    Note

    • Save the backup data on Disk
For the computer models that can only allow system recovery to be performed on Disk C, user can save backup data on the Disk D before a system recovery.
However, if there is a problem with the hard disk, system cannot be recovered properly, and user may encounter data loss.
In addition, data may be lost because of system recovery.

    • Data backup of added software
The software that has been installed by customers using an installation disc cannot be backed up.
It is necessary to reinstall the software after a system recovery.
      Sorry for inconvenience.
    • Models configured with TPM security chip
If user performs a system recovery using the VAIO model boarded with TPM security chip, and in encryption state when the TPM function is enabled, user cannot read the encrypted data.
If user wants to perform a system recovery, please be sure to decrypt the encrypted data, and then back up the data.
If user cannot start Windows or back up data, please use system backup record or urgent recovery mark to restore the TPM setting.
However, please note that the data that user cannot be read that cannot be recovered.
    • Backup data using the Windows encrypted function
If user reinstalls system while the Windows encryption function is enabled, the encrypted data cannot be read. If user wants to perform a system recovery, please be sure to decrypt the encrypted data first, and then back up the data.
However, please note that the data that user cannot be read that cannot be recovered.

Please refer to the technical support information from Microsoft.

    Notices for system recovery steps

    Remark
Please unload the added devices (include memory chip) and peripheral devices, in order to narrow down the cause of the problem, and then perform system recovery.
If user doesn't unload the memory chip, the system may become instable after a system recovery. Please unload the added memory chip before performing a system recovery again.

    • Remove peripheral devices or unplug all the wires

Please remove printer and other peripheral devices.
For notebook that has no attached mouse, please unplug the installed mouse.
In addition, please confirm whether any card has been plugged into the PC card slot.

Please unplug all the wires, except cable or telephone wire connected to the network, power wire and monitor connecting wire.
    • Please remove the added devices (including memory chip).

When the memory is upgrading, computer becomes instable. Even the power indicator light is on, the BIOS menu does not show up.

In addition, because memory itself has its own speed, please don't use memory chip that set up by BIOS, it may cause OE error.
If the following phenomenon occurs, please unload the memory chip.

      • Windows cannot start properly.
      • An error message displays on the memory test in VAIO Hard Disk Recovery Tool.
      • System recovery cannot be ended properly.
      • Although user performs a system recovery, the error still persists.

      Note
When memory upgrades, please unload standard memory chip. Before user performs system recovery, please reinstall the unloaded memory chip.
When user performs a system recovery, the memory capacity user uses is less than standard memory capacity, and the computer will display an error message.
    • Types of system recovery

There are several types of system recovery, please select a type of system recovery that user wants in the system recovery menu.

      • Drive for recovering Disk C (system recovery drive)
      • Perform system recovery by changing the partition size
      • Restore the system to default value after a system recovery

※ The system recovery menu displayed may vary from different VAIO models.
Regarding the detailed information of system recovery, please refer to the instruction or online manual.

Generally, it is recommended user to recover Disk C drive.
    • How to perform a system recovery?
The steps to perform a system recovery may vary from different VAIO models.
Regarding the detailed information of system recovery, please refer to the instruction or online manual.

      Remark
The steps to perform a system recovery include initializing BIOS setting value.
Please refer to the system recovery steps in the instruction to initialize BIOS setting value.
    • Install Microsoft Office and other software
According to different VAIO models, user can install Microsoft Office and other software personally after system recovery.

Some VAIO models need to install all the programs except Microsoft Office on the CD-ROM that came with the computer

      Remark
After user installs Microsoft Office, please validate it again.

Things need to be checked after a system recovery

    • Things need to be checked after a system recovery

After a system recovery, please confirm whether computer problems have been resolved.

After a system recovery, please change system files before installing or updating software.
However, after a system recovery, if user doesn't install Microsoft Office and other software, please install these office software.

If this phenomenon doesn't occur before user adds the third-party software except the attached software. It is estimated that this phenomenon is caused by the added software or hard disk.
    • Improve computer security

The computer will be restored to default setting after a system recovery.
After the system has been recovered in order to improve the computer security, please perform Windows Update program and to keep Windows up-to-date.

      Note
When the computer is connected to the network, it can be infected with viruses. Thus, please take measures to protect the computer from virsues.
    • Recover the backed-up data

Please refer to the information and webpages to recover backup data.
