How to activate the anti-virus function of Outlook Express 6.0?

Settings to activate the anti-virus function of Outlook Express Ver.6.0 to protect the computer from e-mail viruses.


A. Enable the active contents of e-mails in the HTML format using Security Zone of Internet Explorer.

The use of Security Zone allows the user to enable/disable the execution of the active contents of ActiveX Control and Script in HTML e-mails of Outlook Express.
Restricted site zone is set as default in Outlook Express Ver.6.0.

Note: Changing the settings of Security Zone may expose the computer to the codes which may cause problems. Be careful when changing the settings.

1. Start Outlook Express, click Tools and then click Options.
2. Click the Security tab and select the Restricted site zone (More secure) option or Internet zone (Less secure, but more functional).
3. Click OK and close Outlook Express.
4. Start Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options and click the Security tab.
5. Click the security zone selected on Outlook Express previously and then click Custom Level.
6. Select the required settings and click OK.
* Prompt: Select the process by checking the confirmation message.
Disable: Restrict the operation and download automatically without showing the confirmation message.
Enable: Process automatically without showing the confirmation message.

The security settings made in Security Settings are applied to both Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.

B. To prevent e-mails from being sent from the software without user's prior approval

When the user sets Outlook Express as the standard mail handler (Simple MAPI client), Outlook Express will process the requests using the Simple MAPI call.

Note:
Some computer viruses take advantage of this function to send copies of infected e-mails to the mail addresses registered to the computer to replicate themselves.
The initial settings of Outlook Express 6 are made to show the dialog box confirming whether the user agrees to send the mail so that any mail cannot be sent out without user's prior approval.

1. Start Outlook Express, click Tools and then click Options.
2. Click the Security tab and select the Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me option.
3. Click OK.

To disable this protection when the user access an application using Simple MAPI Call on daily basis, disable the Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me option.

C. Apply the filter to the files attached to e-mails by using the Unsafe File list in Internet Explorer.

1. Start Outlook Express, click Tools and then click Options.
2. Click the Security tab and select the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus option.
3. Click OK.

Note
The Unsafe File list in Internet Explorer 6 includes all types of files that may include the scripts and the codes associated with the file types. Follow the steps below to add in the types of file for blocking.

1. Click Control Panel, click Tools and then click Folder Options.
2. Click the File Types tab, select the file types to block and click Advanced.
3. Select the Confirm open after download option and click OK.
4. Click Close.

D. To check that an attached file is blocked

When an attached file is blocked with Outlook Express, the following message will appear on the message warning bar on the upper portion of the e-mail.
As the following attached file is unsafe, it is deleted from the access. (File name).
