Why are there lost frames when capturing and recording with DV devices?
The settings of the VAIO computer may cause lost frames at the time of capturing images from a DV device with DVgate and the overlap of frames at the time of recording edited images.
To avoid this symptom, please check the following settings for the respective Window environment.
Note: Settings vary depending on operating system.
1. For Windows 98
a. Strongly recommended settings
- Set a drive for saving moving images in a built-in hard disk drive
- Enable the DMA data transfer of the hard disk drive
- Disable Find Fast (only when Microsoft Office is installed).
b. Further recommended settings to reduce lost frames
- Remove USB peripheral devices.
- Disable auto-run of CD-ROM.
- Quit other programs.
- Defragment or format the hard disk drive regularly.
- Stop using the network adaptor.
- Turn off the active desktop
c. When the above settings cannot resolve the problem
- Fix the size of virtual memory
2. For Windows Me
a. Strongly recommended settings
- Set a drive for saving moving images in the built-in hard disk drive
- Enable the DMA data transfer of the hard disk drive
- Disable Find Fast (only when Microsoft Office is installed).
- Turn off PCHealth Schedule.
c. Further recommended settings to reduce lost frames

a. Strongly recommended settings
i. Set a drive for saving moving images in the hard disk drive
As a large amount of data is read or written at high speed to capture or export moving images, the fragmented hard disk drive may cause lost frames.
Therefore, to avoid this, the hard disk drive where images are saved with DVgate Motion must always be defragmented or formatted regularly in order to make the free areas of the hard disk drive contiguous.
If using a hard disk drive for saving images, the drive on which the operating system is installed, fragmentation tends to take place and defragmentation may take a long time. Always use other drives such as D: which the operating system is not installed.
Note:
To use DVgate Motion, the hard disk drive that is used to save files must have a sufficient disk space.
To edit a file, the free area should be large enough to store the data of the captured images, the data of the images created at the time of edit and the data at the time of output.
Make sure that the hard disk drive should have a free area about 3 times larger than the storing data. As a guide of the size of moving images in DV format to be saved in the hard disk drive, prepare a 2GB free area for moving images to be played back in about 9 minutes and 30 seconds.
ii. Enable the DMA data transfer of the hard disk drive
Enabling the DMA data transfer of the hard disk drive reduces load to the CPU.
iii. Disable Find Fast (only when Microsoft Office is installed)
1. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Find Fast icon.
3. In the Index menu, disable the Run when I log on option.
4. Click the Index menu and select Close & Stop.
iv. Turn off PCHealth Scheduler
Turn off the scheduled task so that PCHealth Scheduler (Data Collection) does not start when Dvgate is in operation.
1. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Scheduled Task.
3. Double-click Scheduler for Data Collection.
4. In the Task tab, disable the Enabled scheduled task runs at specified time option.
5. Click OK.
These settings will reset to default when the computer restarts. Changes have to be made whenever the computer restarts.
v. Set write caching on the hard disk drive (Windows 2000, XP)
Set write caching on the hard disk drive with the steps below.
For Windows 2000: Right-click My Computer and click Properties.
For Windows XP: Click Start, right-click My Computer and click Properties.
1. Click the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
2. Double-click Disk Drive to expand the tree.
3. Double-click the model name of the hard disk drive.
4. Click the Disk Properties tab.
5. Select the Enable write caching on the disk option.
6. Click OK.
b. Further recommended settings in order to reduce lost frames
i. Remove USB peripheral devices.
If you use USB peripheral devices and lost frames occur frequently, remove those devices from your computer or do not use them. This is because some USB peripheral devices apply excessive loads to the CPU.
ii. Disable auto-run feature of CD-ROM (Windows 98, Me)
iii. Quit other running programs except DVgate Motion.
iv. Scan disk or defragment the hard disk drive regularly to ensure the drive is free from error.
v. Stop using a network adaptor
When using a network adaptor, disconnect the computer from the network by detaching the network cable from the network or disable the network settings.
vi. Disable active desktop
Follow the steps below to disable the desktop.
1. Right-click on an open area on the desktop.
2. Click the Web tab.
3. Disable the Show Web content on my Active Desktop option.
vii. Turn off the scheduled tasks that may start during the use of DVgate.
1. Start Scheduled Tasks.
2. Double-click the scheduled tasks and follow the instructions to disable the tasks that are not required.
3. Click the Task tab and disable the Enabled (scheduled task runs at specified time) option.
* Enable the scheduled tasks only after using DVgate.
4. Click OK.
viii. Turn off automatic updates
1. Click Start and right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties and click the Automatic Updates tab.
3. Disable the Turn off automatic updating. I want to update my computer manually option.
4. Click OK.
c. When the above settings cannot resolve the problem
i. Fix the size of virtual memory
The recommended values of virtual memory for Windows 2000 and Windows XP are:
- Initial Size 1.5 x Installed RAM size
- Maximum Size 2 x Installed RAM.
Note: Setting very low values to the virtual memory create problems when running programs.
Should problems occur, increase the values in virtual memory. It is recommended to set the virtual memory to System managed size when DVgate Motion is not in use.
ii. Adjust for the best performance
1. Click Start and right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties and click the Advanced tab
3. In Performance, click Settings.
4. Select the Adjust for best performance option and click OK.
Note: When making the above settings, the visual effects specific in Windows XP will be disabled.
To enable the visual effects after using DVgate, disable the Automatically select the optimum for computer option.

The recommended values of virtual memory for Windows 2000 and Windows XP are:
