Why can't the wireless LAN be used?

    - The Wireless switch on the unit is switched on but it does not work (the Wireless LAN indicator on the unit lights up).
    - The speed of data transfer is slow.
    - There is no connection to the Internet.

The steps to resolve this symptom vary depending on the situation:

    A. Wireless LAN cannot be used
    - To establish communication using a wireless LAN access point, perform the complete settings of the access point.
    - Check if the Wireless switch on the unit is turned on.
    - Ensure that the Wireless device off (radio off) option is unchecked with the steps below:
Note: When the Wireless LAN Driver 1.1.6.0 update program for PCG-Z1* has been installed, there will be no option for Wireless device off (radio off). Therefore, there is no need to select this option.
    1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
    2. Click Performance and Maintenance and then click System.
    3. Click the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.
    4. Double-click Network adapters, right-click on Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter and then click Properties.
    5. Click the Advanced tab and ensure that the Wireless device off (radio off) option is unchecked.
If this option is selected, uncheck it and click OK.
    The following message appears:
Msg: W20NCPA: This setting will only take effect if the adapter's power button has been switched on.
    6. Click OK.

    B. Check if the wireless LAN access point appears in Available networks.
    1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
    2. Click Network and Internet Connections and then click Network Connections.
    3. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and then click Properties.
    4. Click the Wireless Networks tab and check that the wireless LAN access point is shown.

    C. The network key may not be entered or a wrong network key may have been entered.
Please refer to the steps below to enter the network key again to check if the connection is established.
    1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
    2. Click Network and Internet Connections and then click Network Connections.
    3. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and then click Properties.
    4. Click the Wireless Networks tab, select the desired setting and then click Properties.
    5. Re-enter the network key and click OK.
    6. Click OK.

    D. When the data transfer speed is slow
    - The data transfer speed varies depending on the distance between communication devices, the obstructions, hardware configuration, the state of radio waves and the types of software to use.
Position the VAIO computer or bring it closer to the other machine to communicate and check if the symptom improves.
    - If interference with other wireless LAN access points occurs, establish the settings of the wireless channel at the access point.
    - Access may concentrate on the wireless LAN access point.

    E. When Internet cannot be connected
The settings of e-mail or the Internet browser may have been improperly established.
Check with the Internet Service Provider or the administrator of the internal network about the mail servers and proxys.
